Isobella was in love with a calculator.
She was eight years old and she was a math prodigy. She could add, subtract, divide, multiply, and square.
"You take the square of two, I jump into the sea, the sea is four, the stars are sixteen. Square sea becomes a star in the Milky Way."
She just kept rattling on, about stars, trees, plants, the sea, fish and a mountain and how all of this was somehow connected to numbers.
Her mother didn't always know what to do with her imagination. She gave her a calculator for her ninth birthday.
"I calculate with stars and mountains, mama," she said. "I use my Calculator Bob (yes, she had given it a name...) and I see deep into things..."
Calculator Bob got a paper heart stuck on it, colored in with a red marker.
Isobella couldn't get enough of Calculator Bob, she talked about it incessantly.
She was fourteen. One day, Isobella started acting strange. She started talking oddly.
"The world is no longer right, everything comes to nothing! The world is upside down!" Isobella began screaming out loud sometimes. She started throwing cups at her mother.
"What is it, child!" Her mother didn't know what to do anymore.
"Stars are disappearing! There are hurricanes and all the fish are dying! The mountains are going to drown in the sea!"
This lasted a few days.
Isobella slept, fortunately. With Calculator Bob on her nightstand. Her mother saw that the paper heart had been torn off.
What is this?
She typed on the calculator. From one to nine. The number five didn't work. Calculator Bob was broken, every answer was wrong.
Her mother bought a new calculator for Isobella.
A few days later, Isobella was happy again.
She said the mountains were back in their place, the fish were swimming in the sea again.
All the stars were back in their place.
THE END
