Most of this movie entails the subjective experiences of the lead character. It’s mostly hallucinations and misinterpretations of a reality he can't face up to. It pretty much led to his end.

I don’t think that he or his wife were evil. They were both too dissociated to realise they were killers.

I think that this movie uses the unconscious forces of WWII that blinded the characters and made them violent without their concious permission.

This movie is deeply disturbing and brings into question our collective sanity…

… and that this sanity is very fragile.
